Re: URGENT Appeal for Action – City’s VoIP Contract
On Wednesday November 20th, Winnipeg City Council will be voting to accept or reject the recommendation of its Administration to award the City Of Winnipeg’s landline VoIP contract to an out-of-province provider. TEAM-IFPTE Local 161 will make a presentation before Council, advocating on behalf of our members outlining where we feel there were problems in the tendering criteria and decision making process. We are asking for your support.
Can you call or contact your City Councillor by end of day tomorrow (Tuesday) to ask them to reject the recommendation? We have prepared some key points to outline the issue:
- Loss of local opportunity to be the provider of a major ‘made in Manitoba’ VoIP installation.
- Security concerns as the bidding criteria only requires the data to be retained and stored in Canada. Who has access to the data, what happens if the Company is sold to a foreign owner, and will the data ever leave Canada?
- Hi-tech work leaving Winnipeg and Manitoba reduces job opportunities and removes cash from our local economy.
- It is important that Council does not rush to make a decision, and takes into account ALL costs and chooses the solution which is in the City’s best interests.
