From The Bargaining Table
Our commitment to you is, as it has always been, to present your issues to the Company at Bargaining. For the past 3 days (August 27 – 29), your Bargaining Committee has worked day and night to achieve a fair collective agreement for you and your family.
In our last communiqué dated August 27, we repeated to the membership that this is a very serious round of bargaining and it continues to be so. Under the Canada Labour Code, conciliation has now transitioned into mediation.
For the past three days of mediation we have worked very hard and have modified proposals, dropped less significant proposals, given our utmost efforts to reach wording that will fairly represent member issues and be acceptable by the Company. As a result, the company has slowly moved to accept some minor wording changes. However, the Company still seems to be unwilling to come to a middle ground and conveys no sense of urgency to deal with some of the most significant issues that the membership have identified.
As of yesterday your Bargaining Committee has moved to give the company all proposals, including the monetary package. It is now in the Company’s hands and we await their response. We anticipate the company to return to the table to engage in a meaningful and understanding manner and to take action and recognize that our proposals are the members’ needs.
The Defined Contribution pension plan has been proposed by the Company. In the coming days, they may or may not choose to pursue this issue. At which time we will of course keep you informed. We continue to defend your Defined Benefit pension plan at the bargaining table.
Sept 13, 2007 is the first possible legal lock out/strike date. No vote occurs if the company chooses to lock-out its employees. A lock-out is at the sole discretion of the company and can be called at any time after 12:01 am of September 13th. A strike vote is mandated by law before any union can go on strike. TEAM has repeatedly indicated to our members that we have no interest in pursuing a strike. However it is incumbent upon us, as a duty to the membership, to begin preparing in the event of a Company initiated lockout.
Our next dates to meet are September 6 & 7. We remain hopeful that the Company will return in agreement to the wording in our proposals. We continue to pursue a fair collective agreement while recognizing the need to find a balance of employee and business needs.
