Re:           Public Consulations re the Accessibility for Manitobans Act

On behalf of Yutta Fricke, Acting Executive Director, Government of Manitoba Disabilities Issues Office:

Greetings,

The Accessibility for Manitobans Act became law December 5, 2013.  The purpose of the legislation is to prevent and remove barriers that affect persons with disabilities.  The legislation will be implemented through the introduction of standards in five areas: customer service, information and communication, transportation, employment and the built environment.  Honourable Jennifer Howard, Minister responsible for Persons with Disabilities, identified Customer Service as the first priority area for standard development.

In order to launch the consultative process of standard development, a Standard Development Committee on Customer Service has been established and has developed a discussion paper for public input.  On behalf of the Standard Development Committee, the Disabilities Issues Office (DIO) is requesting yourassistance in sharing with your membership important information on the Initial Proposed Customer Service Standard and encouraging feedback through written submissions to the DIO or by participating in the public consultations June 17 OR 18th, in-person or via webcast (click here for details).

Thank you in advance for your assistance in reaching organizations and associations that will be affected by this accessibility legislation.  Nearly one in six Manitobans has a disability and this number is expected to grow. When we make Manitoba accessible to people with disabilities everyone benefits!
