TEAM Collective Agreement Bulletin

Telecommunications Employees Association of Manitoba

TEAM-IFPTE LOCAL 161

Over the last three weeks TEAM has been working with the federally appointed mediator to achieve a tentative Collective Agreement with the Company.  During this process TEAM moved significantly in many areas to get the best deal we could for you, our members, including meaningful protections for your DB pension plan.

TEAM is pleased at the progress made through this process with MTS Allstream, and we believe that we are making significant progress toward securing a new Collective Agreement.

We had hoped that we would reach a settlement during talks that occurred yesterday, but unfortunately we were unable to reach an agreement within the limited time available.  The Company indicated that their availability during the next two months was limited due to other bargaining commitments.

The Company’s termination of the Collective Agreement is a standard practice in protracted labour negotiations.  As the company has stated "the termination of the collective bargaining agreement will not bar you from working.  It will not negatively impact your pay, benefits or pension plan".  We feel positive that the continued process with the Company will lead to a renewed and improved Collective Agreement within the three-month timeframe.

We are pleased to hear the Company’s assurances, both verbally and in writing that they have no plans to lock out our members.  TEAM and MTS have been in a legal position to take labour action since September 13, 2007, and neither side has proposed any such actions.  TEAM has repeatedly given assurances that we have absolutely no plans to take strike action, and we maintain that position.  Our assertion not to strike, combined with MTS’s assurance not to lock out their employees, negates any risk to the employees, the Company, the shareholders and the customers.

We look forward to a continued dialogue with the Company and the securing of a new Collective Agreement that is beneficial to both the employees and the employer.

On December 5th in Winnipeg and December 6th in Brandon TEAM will be holding General Membership meetings where members of the Bargaining Committee will be available to answer questions on the status of negotiations.

Thank you for your support,

Your TEAM Bargaining Committee
